Experts warn land mass unstable in B.C. hamlet where landslide killed four

JOHNSONS LANDING, B.C. - Another landslide is possible in the mountains around a remote southeast B.C. community where four people were killed by an avalanche of mud, rock and debris last July.

The bad news comes in a geotechnical analysis of the slope stability near the Kootenay community of Johnsons Landing that says more land could come loose.

A father and his two grown daughters died when their home was buried in the slide, as did a German woman whose body was never recovered.

Dawn Attorp, a director with the Central Kootenay Regional District, says the likelihood of another disaster won't be known until another season of wet weather passes.

She says officials will be meeting with several dozen residents to discuss their options, and another expert will be heading to the area to determine whether any homes could be in the path of danger.

Experts have said it appears heavy rains over the summer set off a chain reaction that caused a creek to burst, leading to the deadly landslide.
