AYR, Ont. - Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty says if there is evidence organized crime has a firm grip on the province's economy, he wants to hear about it, and not through the media.
Former RCMP chief superintendent Ben Soave told a Quebec television network that organized crime has infiltrated Ontario's economy at least as much as it has in Quebec, if not more.
But McGuinty says if anyone has such allegations, they should make them through proper channels.
The premier says he doesn't think senior police officers in Ontario would withhold such information from the government or try to keep it confidential.
McGuinty says if there is any truth to the allegations, he wants to know about it.
Soave said Ontario has the same organized crime groups involved in corruption, and they are probably even more active than in Quebec.
Another Mafia expert, Antonio Nicasso, who lived in Toronto for 15 years, said Ontarians tend to minimize the problem "as long as there is no bloodshed in the streets."
A corruption inquiry in Quebec is looking into links between the construction industry and organized crime.
