MIRAMICHI, N.B. - Opening arguments have begun in the trial of a New Brunswick man accused of killing his 16-year-old-cousin and burying her body in a remote wooded area.

Curtis Wayne Bonnell has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the 2009 death of Hilary Bonnell.

The Crown told the jury that it will hear evidence that the 32-year-old accused picked up Hilary on a road in northern New Brunswick, kept her against her will, sexually assaulted her and killed her.

Crown attorney Bill Richards says Bonnell then buried her near an old firing range to avoid detection.

Hilary went missing after attending a house party on the Esgenoopetitj (Es-geh-no-peh-titch) First Nation on Sept. 5, 2009.

An exhaustive search was conducted over a large area surrounding the community.

The girl's body was found two months later, and Curtis Bonnell was charged in December 2009.

Eight weeks have been set aside for the trial in the Court of Queen's Bench in Miramichi.
